Whether operating new or used forklifts, accidents can occur. What do most of these accidents have in common? Here are the three most-seen factors:

(1) Training

Lacking or subpar training is a common cause of forklift accidents. Expert operation requires training on all aspects of forklift operation, including proper handling of tools, attachments, and accessories.

(2) Maintenance

Improper maintenance of forklifts can easily result in accidents. The age of the forklift can also be an issue.

(3) Production Factors

Workers that are overly stressed or under tight deadlines may cause accidents due to lack of attention or because they are rushing the job. A worker that is over-tired should also avoid forklifts.

While operating a forklift is comparable to driving a car, there are still essential differences that make forklift training a necessity. These include visibility, load stability, lack of stability on inclines or declines, path smoothness (potholes, etc.), speed, load rigging, and load height.

Benefits of OSHA Training

New studies have shown that OSHA-trained forklift operators are better and more efficient at their jobs, and earn more income than those without such training. Companies do not train employees like they did years ago, meaning there are fewer certified forklift drivers in the industry. The demand for operators has therefore increased.

Earning or renewing your certification is easier than ever. Register online or in person and receive the training you need to get the most out of your career!

A newly-developed enhancement to forklift training will soon be available. Its creator says it will cut down on injuries and deaths related to material handling.

A first-of-its-kind virtual reality forklift simulator has been developed by Tactus Technologies. It allows operators to practice using a forklift by means of a video game steering wheel, joysticks and pedals. It simulates typical work environments such as warehouses and elevators.

Up until now, forklift training has been completely passive. This new technology allows for a training environment that is both safe and interactive. Hopes are that forklift accidents will drop significantly once the simulator is on the market.

Would you use this emerging technology for your new hires? For all your forklift needs including training, rentals and service, contact Forklift Nation at (888) 329-5438.

In California, forklift users are looking for ways to increase fuel efficiency to improve their profits. At the same time, we are all looking for ways to cut down on harmful CO2 emissions. Another step has been taken to bring both to material handlers.

Toyota’s European material handling division has developed an improved diesel engine for its Tonero forklift series. The 36kW engine has a new injection pump which is more efficient than previous models. It complies with strict European emissions standards, and the trucks themselves are designed for 99% recyclability at the end of their usability.

Properly watering your forklift battery is essential to maintaining long battery life. You should check your water level during every charge, or at least once a week. Here is a simple procedure to keep yourself safe and your forklift running:

Always use eye protection and rubber gloves.

Disconnect the battery from the charger.

Unscrew each cap from the battery cell, look inside and check the water level.

If the water level is below the plates on the inside, you need to bring the water level just above them. Be careful not to overdo it, as that can cause the water to bubble over next time it’s charged, which can cause acid to come out.

Replace the caps tightly.

Plug the battery back into the forklift and you’re ready to keep working.

Keeping the right level of water in your forklift battery will ensure that you get the longest life from it. If you find yourself in need of a new battery, maintenance, repair, or a new forklift altogether, contact Forklift Nation.

With all the talk of going green and lowering CO2, what can you, a diesel forklift operator/owner, do to conserve? You still need the strength capacity and durability of a diesel engine, and you don’t plan on your business slowing down anytime soon. There must be some sort of compromise.

The new Tonero diesel engine from Toyota Material Handling in Europe is working on just such a solution. Its 2013 model offers 8% percent improved fuel efficiency while still offering the power of 1.5t to 3.5t diesel forklifts. The company says it will offer the new forklift for sale in the 2013 lineup.

Besides severely cutting down on emissions, the efficiency can save businesses money on operating expenses. An even cooler feature is that they are designed to be 99 percent recyclable at the end of their life.

Forklifts are an excellent tool to help get construction projects of all sizes (or any task that requires moving large objects) completed in a timely fashion. Of course it’s not always necessary (or cost effective) to purchase a forklift – instead, you can rent one. Here are three key benefits to renting a forklift:

#3 You’re not on the hook for maintenance and repairs

So you’ve got a small construction project on your hands. You don’t own a forklift, but you need one. Renting allows you to use the forklift and return it, and if something breaks down while you have it (and you aren’t at fault), the renting company will typically cover it. Easy.

#2 Flexibility

Typically, when you rent a forklift you can have it for a short time or for much longer, so if your project goes off schedule (it happens), you can usually re-up and hold on to the forklift until completion.

#1 Cost Effectiveness

Say you’re only working on one (or a few) temporary projects, but don’t usually do such projects on a regular basis. Or perhaps you do many projects, but only during certain times of the year. Buying a forklift would be an expensive investment for these projects, while renting one provides a hassle free solution.

For more information about how to rent a forklift, or to find Los Angeles forklift rentals near you, contact Forklift Nation at (888) 329-5438.

Hint: don't do this.

Safety is number one when driving your California forklift, both for you and the economy. A recent Public Citizen report revealed that occupational injuries in construction forced California taxpayers to pay an extra $2.9 billion from 2008 to 2010, resulting from a staggering 50,700 industry injuries and 168 construction worker deaths.

Prevention is the focus of the report, which is asking California law makers to demand companies to demonstrate that they adhere fully to state safety standards, and that their staff is adequately trained before they are allowed to bid on projects. The report also encourages incentives for clean safety records in the private sector.
